Jewelry Making 101

Basic Supplies
Here's what you need to get started:
  • Project Inspiration / Pattern / Photo
  • Assorted beads
  • Assorted jump rings
  • Clasps / closures for necklaces or bracelets
  • Earwires for earrings
  • Beading wire
  • Head pins
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Side cutters
  • Beading mat
  • Ruler
Tips & Tricks
  • It is important to properly open and close a jump ring. Holding the jump ring with the split to the top, one hand will twist toward you the opposite hand will twist away from you. NEVER open a jump ring by pulling it open. Close the jump ring in the same manner, twisting rather than pushing.

  • When determining the best size or length to create a bracelet, it is a good rule to generally add half an inch to the actual measurement of the wrist. Most femails of small to medium bone have a 6.5 to 6.75 inch wrist if you had to guess.

  • Eyepins (different from head pins) are usually used to create beaded links. Add beads to an eyepin, then form a loop at the top. This will give you a loop on each side of the beads and can be used as a "connector" creating dangle earrings, bracelets and / or necklaces.
